The holiday season changes how we use our homes. Pantries fill up, garage doors open more often, decorations come down from the attic, and guests come and go. For rodents looking for food, warmth, and shelter, those changes can create new opportunities. In Florida, where mild winters mean rodents can stay active year-round, prevention is worth adding to your holiday to-do list.
At BBC Pest Services, our approach comes from 25 years of home inspection experience. We know where Tampa Bay homes tend to have gaps, and we know that most rodent problems start with a small, easy-to-miss entry point.
Common Rodent Entry Points Around Florida Homes
Roof rats are skilled climbers and often reach homes through trees, fences, and utility lines. Other rodents tend to stay closer to the ground. Walk around your home and check these areas:
- Gaps under exterior doors and garage doors
- Rooflines, soffits, and fascia boards
- Attic, dryer, and roof vents with damaged or missing covers
- Openings around plumbing, electrical, cable, and AC lines
- Torn screens on porches, lanais, and windows
Trimming tree branches away from your roofline can also limit easy access to the attic.
How Holiday Food and Storage Can Increase Attraction
Holiday cooking doesn't cause a rodent problem, but more food in the home can make any existing access point more tempting. Keep leftovers and dry goods in sealed containers, clean up spills and crumbs after meals, and keep trash bins closed with tight lids. Pet food and birdseed are common attractants, so store them in sealed containers and avoid leaving pet bowls full overnight. Clutter and stacks of cardboard in garages and attics can also provide nesting spots.
Signs of Rodent Activity to Watch For
Rodents are mostly active at night, so you may notice their signs before you ever see one. Watch for:
- Droppings, especially near food, along walls, or in cabinets
- Gnaw marks on wood, wiring, food packaging, or storage boxes
- Scratching or scurrying sounds in walls or ceilings at night
- Nesting materials such as shredded paper, fabric, or insulation
- Greasy rub marks along walls or rafters
- Musky or unusual odors in closed spaces
What to Do If You Hear Scratching or Find Droppings
If you hear scratching at night or find droppings near stored food, start by throwing away any food packaging that may have been chewed or contaminated. Do not sweep or vacuum the droppings. The CDC recommends wearing gloves, spraying the area with a disinfectant or bleach solution, and wiping it up with paper towels. Then note where you found the activity, since that location can help identify the entry point.
Should I Wait Until I See a Rodent to Call for Help?
No. Because rodents are nocturnal and good at hiding, many homeowners never see one until the problem has grown. According to the CDC, it is easier to control rodents before they become established in a home. If you find droppings, hear sounds, or notice damage, it is a good time to have someone take a closer look.
